Sygma School

About the Researcher

During the summer of 2012, Ralph Hunt '15 interned with alumnus Sangu Delle ’12 at his investment firm Golden Palm Investments (GPI), which is based in Accra, Ghana. After spending several weeks in Accra however, Ralph spent a few weeks at a rural school located near the city of Nsawam (to the Northwest of Accra). Sangu had also established an NGO known as the African Development Initiative (ADI). ADI had recently partnered with Sygma Child School, and it was my duty to evaluate the school and create an evaluation report that ADI could then use to help Sygma overcome its greatest challenges. Many people debate the effectiveness of NGOs when it comes to addressing problems in Africa because they often (unintentionally) end up making the problems that they are trying to solve more complicated. However, ADI separated itself from other NGOs by establishing self-sustaining projects “that provide community stakeholders with choice and a quality service from an organization that is accountable to its customers”. While at Sygma school, Ralph wrote an evaluative report analyzing the school’s strengths and weaknesses from both an academic as well as physical structure standpoint. He also interviewed affiliates of the school and wrote a report that was then sent back to the ADI executive board for further examination. Upon returning to Harvard in fall 2012, Ralph worked with both the undergraduate and executive ADI board to formulate strategies that could address the challenges uncovered during the summer.
